Houston surprisingly took over the rap game eight years ago and those stars who emerged are still dominating the game now. In recent years, Houston has been in the midst of a comeback and they now seem to be breaking through. Tank Law is helping to push this effort along.

Earlier this year, Tank Law dropped his mixtape, Keys to the City. Inspired by both hip hop and Latin music, Tank Law kept this project true to Houston hip hop. The mixtape was hosted by legendary Houston hip hop figure, Michael 5000 Watts, which brought something different to the mixtape.

Hip Hop Vibe talked to Tank Law earlier today. He discussed his “Bout That” single and the potential remix that should feature some big names. Tank Law spoke on the Houston hip hop scene and he even previewed his upcoming work. The profile of Tank Law is rising because of his ongoing performances, opening up for Pusha T, Wale, Future, and more.

Read the entire interview below:

How do you feel about the expansion of the Texas hip hop scene in recent years? It’s going pretty good, I like the way it has picked up here recently. For a minute, we were hurting and it was a bad sight to see.

What do you think you are bringing to the table that is different, in terms of your music? I have been there and done that. I talk about the things that I have scene, I am very well-known in the streets and the people know me. We already dealt with Jay-Z, we are bringing that realness back to the game.

Can you tell us more about your “Bout That” single? Oh man. “Bout That,” it’s off my mixtape with Michael Watts, produced by T.A., he was signed by Young Jeezy. I freestyled that and it came out well. We dropped the video a few weeks ago and it’s done over 300,000 views. This was my resume/warning to the game, showing the industry what I’m about it. Master P was a major motivation for me doing that single.

A lot of rappers have taken their singles and have done major remixes, do you have something like that planned? Yeah (laughs). I can’t reveal right now who is going to be on it, but I have some OGs up there who will do the remix. A week from now, I can tell you more about the remix.

You have dropped two mixtapes, already, this year, how do you feel about the reaction to those tapes? Yes. Yes it was. The people loved the music, they accepted it and it motivated me to go ahead and record. Now, I am working on my first album. Everybody loved my mixtape, Keys to the City, which Michael 5000 Watts hosted, they loved the music and it motivated me to work on my album.

Already, you have shared the stage with big names such as Pusha T and other big names, should we expect someone along those lines to appear on your album? Like I said, expect some big names production-wise and artists wise on my upcoming projects. Yeah, expect some, we’re waiting on some people who are on some labels to get back to us. Can’t really say Pusha T, specifically.

Will the “Bout That” remix be used as the first single for this project, or are you not that far along as of yet? Off the mixtape, it is the single. Now, I am working on the video for my next single, “Standing on the Couch.”

As far as the next project is concerned, do you have a release date in mind? Yes sir. September the 4th. We have a very huge DJ who will be hosting this, we are still working on the details, however.

In the meantime, will we be seeing Tank Law on some records from some other people? Yeah. Right now. I just did a feature on a big record for a pop singer on Def Jam. Really, that’s all I’ve done, I don’t get the opportunity to work with many major artists on appearances. But, on the underground, I have a lot of stuff coming.
