HHV Exclusive: Gillie Da Kid talks “Tattoo” with Jeremih, “King of Philly 2,” and Meek Mill situation

Gillie Da Kid 6Just like last year, this year has been full of comebacks in the rap game. A fan favorite and mixtape legend, Gillie Da Kid, was among the 2013 comebacks. Gillie Da Kid dropped his new mixtape, King of Philly 2, which is hosted by the ever-popular mixtape legend, DJ Drama.

Gillie Da Kid launched his mixtape with the Pusha T-assisted single, “Tryna Get Me One,” which came out in January. Now, as the summer is in full swing and has taken over, Gillie Da Kid has a new single in the works. Already, Gillie Da Kid released behind the scenes photos of “Tattoo” with Jeremih.

King of Philly has Gillie Da Kid back in the headlines, but for a different reason. It is not beef going on, but the media has hyped tweets from Meek Mill. When Gillie Da Kid released the “King Me” track, many assumed it was beef. Hip Hop Vibe talked to Gillie Da Kid about this, setting the record straight and speaking on music.

Read the entire interview below:

Alright, so can you tell us the motivation behind your “Tattoo” record? I just heard the Mannie Fresh beat and then me and my team got on it. We wanted to make something fresh for the women, but something the homies could ride to as well. Tattoos are big in our culture right now, so we decided to make it happen.

How did you and Jeremih link up for this single? Well, I already had the record and the hook done once it got to Jeremih. But, I checked out who would sound good on the hook and Jeremih came to mind. So, I reached out to some mutual friends, we hooked it up, and that’s how we got it going.

Do you like the reception the song received? The behind the scenes stuff is out, but the official record has not been released yet. Stay tuned for it though.

Why did you choose to revisit the original King of Philly mixtape? That’s a series of mixtapes that I’m doing with DJ Drama. King of Philly is my brand that I’m building. I liked my previous mixtape series, Appetizer, so I decided to do a new series, King of Philly.

What is it like when you and DJ Drama get together, you both are Philadelphia guys? Absolutely, Drama’s a good dude, he put his time in, he put his hustle in. He is a Philly native who is putting in work in Atlanta and he is a key DJ throughout the world, so who better to get with besides him?

Can you talk about the Meek Mill feature? Yeah! Yo Gotti is also on that record, “Real Niggaz.” I did the record, I reached out to Yo Gotti, he’s a real nigga, so shout him out on a real nigga tip to the King of Memphis for doing the verse as soon as I sent it. After I did it, I hooked up with Meek at Batcave, I came into his session and why knocked it out, he jumped right on it.

Do you have any idea if he was really taking shots at you? I don’t know. But, I assume so, I don’t pay that shit no mind.

A lot of people think “King Me” is a diss record, but you said it was prerecorded, can you talk more about that? It’s a street record that can work in the clubs. At the end of the day, when you’re in the club and you got that lick in you, you feel like a king, or a queen if you are a lady. But, be clear, this is not a diss record, I have nothing against Meek Mill. Some people might want to send shots through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but I’m no social media assassin, I’m not about that.

Ultimately, can you see you and Meek Mill sitting down to work towards a resolution? To me, there’s no beef. The apparent beef is only from his side. I look at it like this, you can’t possibly be saying I’m not the king of Philly. On the internet, there is a video of him bringing me out at a concert where he called me the king of Philly. He said “I know y’all know this nigga, the King of Philly, Gillie Da Kid, come on out.

Can you give us your Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? My Twitter is @GillieDaKid, my Instagram is Gillie_Da_Kid, my Facebook is Gillie Da Kidd with two Gs because somebody stole my name up there.
