No independent artist did what Mac Miller was able to do. A significant reason Mac Miller became one of the biggest rappers in the game was because of his ability to market himself on the internet. Before gaining the support of the hip hop websites, Mac Miller pushed his music through YouTube.

Dropping mixtapes on the internet and their joining videos on YouTube, Mac Miller became a Pittsburgh legend. Soon, Mac Miller was a part of the Rostrum Records roster alongside Wiz Khalifa. In 2010, Wiz Khalifa turned down Maybach Music and then signed with Atlantic Records, taking his movement mainstream.

Mac Miller’s popularity spilled over in 2011, but he shunned the mainstream. Choosing to release Blue Slide Park independently, Mac Miller topped the charts. Last year, toward the end of the year, Mac Miller announced Watching Movies with the Sound Off, his sophomore album and he revealed via Twitter the June 18 release date.
