When it comes to West Coast hip hop, the scene remained rather dormant until 2011 when Tyga and many other rappers from Los Angeles gained momentum. Despite being a member of Young Money, Tyga did not build a significant fan base until he began hitting the mixtape scene hard. The mixtapes led to his mainstream reintroduction.

Many of the “New West” artists have gained their fame due to their mixtapes. When it came to his new album, Tyga decided to approach it from a mixtape standpoint. Tyga admitted to drawing inspiration from the old school, including early music from Jay-Z and Tupac Shakur.

Early this morning, Tyga talked to DJ Skee about Hotel California. During the interview, Tyga talked about mixtapes as opposed to albums, saying mixtapes have actually replaced the albums. Tyga went on to talk about his California influence and the “New West” vs. the old school West Coast.
