Hip hop publishing is probably looked down on more than any other form of media because of the close relationships between the writers and their topics. Lines get crossed all the time and the media outlets end up being caught up in the crossfire. The Source was famously run into the ground with Benzino at the helm.

At the same time, rappers’ influence on hip hop media has also worked well, as both Jay-Z and 50 Cent own successful hip hop websites. Over the course of his career, Nas has been hailed lyrically superior to all of his peers, but his business mind was never there. But, Nas recently made an investment in Mass Appeal magazine.

Mass Appeal never received the same attention as the heavyweights, but was an impressive magazine. The print publication suspended in 2008 and is preparing to return and has done well in 2013. Nas is not the first rapper to be a part of Mass Appeal, as R.A. the Rugged Man used to write for them.
