Hip hop went through many changes and ended up turning rappers off from 2006-2008 and many emcees turned on each other. During this period of time, the “hip hop is dead” discussion was prominent. Late in 2008, a lot of focus was placed upon Drake, J. Cole, and Wale.

Representing small market cities not known for hip hop, they had powerful years and all signed major deals. Wale took a unique journey, but finds himself in the same position as his peers, on top of the game. Now, there is a new trend in hip hop with many lyrical veterans returning and the newcomers want to bring the 1990s back.

Wale is a part of this trend and he recently told Sway Calloway his plans for his third opus, The Gifted, on MTV’s “RapFix Live.” During the interview, Wale talked about the music he has in the works. Listening to 1990s music and early Kanye West albums, Wale is intent on taking things back.
