From the beginning, Jay-Z saw something special in Rick Ross. During his tenure at the helm of Def Jam, Jay-Z brought Rick Ross to the label, beating out Irv Gotti who wanted to add Ross to the Murder Inc. label. At the time, Rick Ross was working with DJ Khaled, then-known for being Fat Joe’s DJ.
However, DJ Khaled was hip hop’s hardest-working DJ and he was making his rounds through the game. For years, DJ Khaled was major, yet not quite in hip hop’s elite circle and many felt it was due to the unspoken beef between Fat Joe and Jay-Z. In 2008, the two performed together and Khaled DJ-ed.
Since Jay-Z shouted DJ Khaled out, all has been well between all the camps, which made the Rick Ross takeover easier. DJ Khaled has since, hands down, become the biggest DJ in hip hop. Earlier today, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and DJ Khaled met with Timbaland and held a studio session.
