DJ YRS Jerzy’s Wednesday Throwback: Method Man ft. Mary J. Blige – “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need to Get By”

Last week and even this week, there is still a lot of focus on The Notorious B.I.G. Rest in peace to the legend, but there were many more legends created in the mid-1990s. Wu-Tang Clan took over the streets, while Bad Boy Records handled the mainstream. But, in 1995, Method Man earned his own solo success.

In 1994, Method Man released his debut album, Tical, that is considered among the classic debut albums along with Nas’ Illmatic, B.I.G.’s Ready to Die, and Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt. But,  for a short time, Method Man was the biggest rapper in the game when he released “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need to Get By,” which most just call “All I Need.”

On the song, Method Man mixes two unrelated worlds with his samples. Sampling Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “You’re All I Need to Get By,” Mary J. Blige sings a 1990s version of their 1968 hit for the chorus and background. Meanwhile, Method Man sampled The Notorious B.I.G. from his legendary ode, “Me & My Bitch.”
