The Notorious B.I.G.’s legacy was not limited to simply rap, R&B also heavily was inspired by Biggie. Irv Gotti, the founder of Murder Inc. Records, and the top producer in the game in the early 2000s, had a chance to work with B.I.G. At the height of his run, the man who helped introduce Jay-Z, Ja Rule, and Ashanti brought Biggie back.

Ashanti made her debut in 2001, on Ja Rule’s “Always on Time.” Released as a single early in 2002, the song topped Billboard. During the summer of 2002, Ashanti was introduced to the world as a solo artist. For her debut single, “Foolish,” Irv Gotti patterned the instrumental after The Notorious B.I.G.’s “One More Chance.”

“One More Chance,” itself, samples Grover Washington, Jr.’s “Hydra.” But, in the Ashanti version, a pre-Hustle & Flow, Terrence Howard, stars as an abusive boyfriend. Also, notice the mention of Ja Rule and Jennifer Lopez in the intro. “Foolish” can be found on Ashanti’s self-titled debut album, which was released during the summer of 2002.
