Rightfully so, there is a lot of hype surrounding Kendrick Lamar due to his focus on real lyrics. For nearly a decade, hip hop forgot about its roots and rappers knew they barely had to rhyme. During his brief run, Mims even proclaimed he could “make a mil’ saying nothing on the track.”
Indeed, these were the dark ages, but critics touted guys like Drake and J. Cole to return rap to its roots. Ironically, many of those same critics blame Drake for the erosion of hip hop, but J. Cole was proclaimed as the next leader. Taking 2012 off, J. Cole was forgotten and words meant for him in 2011 now belonged to Kendrick Lamar.
It is a new year and Born Sinner is on the way. J. Cole released “Miss America” in the early days of 2013. The album was delayed until later this year, which gives J. Cole time to release more singles off the album. “Power Trip” is the second single off Born Sinner and it features Miguel. The song will be released later today.
