While Mac Miller had a large and devoted following through his mixtapes and YouTube videos, he did not break through in the mainstream until he released his “Donald Trump” single. At the time, Donald Trump dominated headlines due to his frequent insults hurled at the president. Trump took a break from his tirade to reach out to Mac Miller, saying he was impressed, but did not like the lyrics.

Comparing Mac Miller to Eminem, Donald Trump caught heat from the hip hop community. In the time since then, Mac Miller has enjoyed much commercial success. Mac Miller became the first independent hip hop artist to have a chart-topping album since Big L. Meanwhile, Mac Miller has given Donald Trump his credit and sent him a platinum plaque.

Donald Trump has taken aim at Mac Miller on Twitter, saying he wants royalties off the song, which is named after him. Mac Miller has been called an “ungrateful dog” by the real estate mogul. Saying he needs money and not praise, Donald Trump said Mac Miller can exchange the plaque for money. If this does not happen, Trump does plan to sue.
