Hot 97 program director explains why they do not play underground artists [VIDEO]

This past year, Hot 97 endured much backlash. After openly criticizing Nicki Minaj’s album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Lil Wayne pulled the entire Young Money label from Summer Jam 2012. In between feuding with Young Money, Hot 97 also was forced to contend with the growing popularity of Power 105.1.

Underground artists have also questioned why they do not receive radio play on Hot 97, despite their growing buzz. Even members of hip hop media have posed this same question to Hot 97. The program director, Ebro Darden, addressed this and said these artists can get on Peter Rosenberg’s real late show.

Ebro Darden says the reason he does not play them during the day is because their music is still minor league. Comparing Hot 97 to professional sports, Ebro Darden said these artists have to earn their radio play. Doing less than nothing to console these artists, Darden did open up another forum of discussion.
