Due to recent turns of events, Los Angeles is at the forefront of West Coast hip hop, replacing the Bay Area. The 2011 comeback of Game coincided with strong campaigns from several upstarts, including Kendrick Lamar. All the artists have built large fan bases, but there is special energy surrounding Kendrick Lamar.
A sharp change in Los Angeles hip hop, Kendrick Lamar is a native of Compton, but is not a hardcore rapper. Instead, Kendrick Lamar has been called by several rappers the second coming of Nas, only a West Coast version. Kendrick Lamar laughs off these comparisons, but he made it cool to focus on lyrics in hip hop, once again.
Co-signed by Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar recently appeared on BET’s “Don’t Sleep,” which is hosted by TJ Holmes. During the interview, Kendrick Lamar answered a wide range of questions. Kendrick Lamar first spoke on his role in West Coast hip hop, then his good kid, m.A.A.d. city album, and also talked about his Compton background.
