Needless to say, Damon Dash was one of hip hop’s biggest moguls in the late 1990s, viewed by many as the new Sean Combs. Damon Dash had the vision most hip hop labels lacked, which led to dramatic profits. With Dash running the show, Jay-Z became the biggest rapper in the game and Roc-A-Fella Records flourished.
Jay-Z also proved to be a strong businessman, catching the attention of L.A. Reid, who appointed him president of Def Jam. With Jay-Z taking over Def Jam, he was expected to hand over his position at Roc-A-Fella Records. Damon Dash’s selection of Cam’ron was enough to drive the final wedge between the two bosses.
In the time since then, Jay-Z has neared billionaire status, while Damon Dash neared bankruptcy. Damon Dash has turned things around and has several projects in the works. Global Grind would speak to Damon Dash and he discussed these new projects, Jay-Z, and much more.
