Five months ago, Nicki Minaj released her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which was a commercial success. The commercial appeal of the album would lead to the eventual backlash from the hip hop community for Nicki Minaj. “Starships” would perform well, bringing in a different type of audience for the Young Money femcee.

During the summer of 2012, Nicki Minaj ended up feuding with New York City radio station, Hot 97, over the “Starships” single. Before Nicki Minaj took the stage at Hot 97’s Summer Jam 2012, personality, Peter Rosenberg, dissed her single. Rosenberg was discussing real hip hop and said he did not mean music like “Starships,” which led to Lil Wayne pulling Young Money out of the show.

Earlier tonight, however, none of this mattered, as Nicki Minaj was in Los Angeles at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. Nicki Minaj was nominated for ‘Best Female Video’ at the VMAs for her single, “Starships.” The moonman would be given to Nicki Minaj, who later said she was surprised because of her win.
