Since 2003, Kendrick Lamar has been signed to local Compton record label, Top Dawg Entertainment. Among his label-mates were ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul. In addition to being solo artists on TDE, the trio also work as Black Hippy. While already signed to Top Dawg, Kendrick Lamar signed with Aftermath Entertainment.

Black Hippy followed suit, signing to Aftermath/Interscope as a collective. With the deal in place, Kendrick Lamar recently explained why they signed with the label. In a recent interview, Kendrick Lamar revealed Black Hippy chose Aftermath/Interscope because of the history they have with signing artists.

When he was looking for the right label, Kendrick Lamar said he only cared about who saw his vision, not the money. Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine saw this vision and he decided to set up shop. Kendrick Lamar likes how artists are developed and sees how Interscope Records is giving Aftermath Entertainment room to grow to the same size as them and he thinks Top Dawg can do the same.
