When LL Cool J was signed by Def Jam, he was the first artist signed to the label. Determined to become the focal point of hip hop, Russell Simmons began a quest to add more hip hop artists. His quest found him speaking with the Beastie Boys and they also joined Def Jam. LL Cool J, though never released much music with the Beastie Boys, got to know them very well.

For two decades, LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys were label-mates. Both have gone on to be considered legends in hip hop and both have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The death of the co-founder of the Beastie Boys has had a profound impact on hip hop. Adam “MCA” Yauch passed away and many have spoken on the situation.

Recently, LL Cool J broke his silence regarding MCA, speaking on both his death and his influence on the game. Though LL Cool J made it to Def Jam first, he credits the Beastie Boys for helping him break into the game and become the hitmaker he is. LL Cool J said fans should preserve the legacy of the Beastie Boys.
