Today is a sad day for fans of the Beastie Boys, as MCA, the co-founder of the trio died earlier today, at the age of 48. Previously, MCA had been diagnosed with cancer, battling the disease since 2009. During their run, the Beastie Boys made history and posted a number of hits for Def Jam, helping to solidify their legacy. In recent years, the Beastie Boys have been out of the spotlight, but they were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

MCA, whose real name is Adam Yauch, did not attend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was not available for much of the recording for their recent album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. Due to his health issues, the Beastie Boys have not performed live since 2009. MCA had been forced to sit on the sidelines over the past three years. While he was forced to be on the outside looking in, MCA’s love for hip hop did not go away.

Unfortunately, MCA has passed away following a three-year battle with cancer, which he discovered when a tumor was found in his salivary gland. Before developing the horrible disease, MCA experienced success, founding the Beastie Boys, initially a rock group, then gaining fame as a hip hop group. Outside of music, MCA took an interest in the movement to free Tibet and even launched his own film company. Now, MCA, Adam Yauch, will be remembered for all the positive things he brought to the world, as he is dead at the age of 48.
