Many feel hip hop has lost its conscience and longtime hip hop fans have been asking for a new rapper to “take hip hop back to its roots.” These wishes were granted in the form of Mac Miller, as he swept into the game, releasing many old school-inspired tracks. Mac Miller took advantage of the tools the internet provides and turned himself into a star. Unlike others, Mac Miller took every opportunity to pay homage to those who came before him.

This was not enough for the critics who panned his debut album, which was impressive on several fronts. It was almost as if all critics saw was a white rapper who used the internet to make himself popular. However, race aside, Mac Miller is one of the few new rappers who use the old school sound, as it suits his style. Regardless, Blue Slide Park, Mac Miller’s debut album, was still met with mostly negative reviews.

Despite how critics felt, the album still sold well, setting records for independent sales. The commercial success pleased Mac Miller, but he was obviously disappointed with the negative reviews. Mac Miller decided to air out his feelings about this on his “Loud” single. Recently, Mac Miller returned to the mixtape game, delivering his Macadelic mixtape, which has been another fan favorite. The lead single, “Loud,” is a standout track, as Mac Miller says “fuck your magazine” several times on the track.

Legendary magazine, XXL, caught up with Mac Miller, asking him about the line. Mac Miller cleared up any possible issues, saying he was not talking about a particular magazine. Instead, the line was directed towards the critics who have been giving him negative feedback. Even without their support, he is still managing to sell records, so this is why he rapped the line about magazines.
