In 2010, several hip hop news outlets reported Diggy Simmons had signed with Atlantic Records and would soon release his debut album. The news was a bit of a surprise, as Diggy had expressed interest in design, as opposed to music, on “Run’s House.” Older brother, JoJo Simmons, however, was a member of a rap group called Team BLACKout, which was signed to an independent label.
Despite the initial buzz, through being Rev Run’s son and being on a reality show, JoJo Simmons’ music career eventually fizzled. The Simmons son would hit rock bottom when he was arrested for possession of marijuana. Meanwhile, the younger Simmons son, Diggy, had landed a major label deal as a solo artist. This led to JoJo becoming subject to jokes on the internet and Angela Simmons, their older sister, speaking out.
Two years later, Diggy Simmons is currently enjoying the success of his second single, “Do It Like You,” featuring Jeremih. While the song is continuing to generate buzz, Diggy Simmons awaits the release of his debut album, Unexpected Arrival. Shawn Barron was the A&R who signed Diggy to Atlantic Records and who helped him put his singles together.
Shawn Barron recently discussed Diggy’s career with AllHipHop.com. During the interview, Barron said he feels Diggy Simmons is going to surprise a lot of people with his album. As Diggy is working on his debut album, Shawn Barron is also fairly new to his role of A&R for the historic Atlantic Records. One thing Barron feels Simmons has that will make him stick out is his sound, as he said he has a sound that will shock the world.
