Immediately following the release of Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, there were rumors of Kanye West releasing a joint album with Jay-Z. The tentative title for the album was Watch the Throne and was to be the first time Jay-Z shared the mic with Kanye West as his equal. A promotional single, “H.A.M.,” was released, followed by several delays on the album.

When fans were close to giving up on Watch the Throne, “Otis” was released and was followed by the album. “Otis” quickly became one of the most-popular songs of 2011, with several artists adding freestyles to the track. The popularity of “Otis” would be eclipsed by the next single, “Niggas in Paris.” Easily Watch the Throne‘s most-popular song, the song was freestyled over and played record-breaking times.

“Niggas in Paris” enjoyed a nice run during the fall of 2011. However, as winter came and the New Year began, the song faded into the background. In recent interviews, Jay-Z has discussed his own upcoming solo album and a Watch the Throne sequel. Even with plans of moving on, more promotion of Watch the Throne will continue. Despite the single being a few months old, Jay-Z and Kanye West will be coming together for an official video for the song, which celebrates their success in spite of their backgrounds.

The video for “Niggas in Paris” comes months after the video for “Otis” premiered.
