In 2009, fans were expecting to soon hear a full-length album from J. Cole. The rapper, who represents Fayetteville, North Carolina, had just been signed to Jay-Z’s new Roc Nation label and had a large underground following. After his verse on “A Star is Born” off Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3, the buzz for J. Cole intensified.

Despite the major buzz and a minor hit single, during the summer of 2010, “Who Dat?,” no release date came for J. Cole. However, in 2010, J. Cole revealed the title of his album would be Cole World. When it became clear no J. Cole album was coming in 2010, he delivered fans his Friday Night Lights mixtape.

Towards the end of the summer of 2011, J. Cole promised fans Cole World: The Sideline Story would be released no later than September 27. Days later, the first official single, “Work Out,” was released. The album debuted on top of the charts and J. Cole quickly turned himself into a household name.

Now, two months following the release of Cole World, J. Cole can celebrate his album going Gold under the RIAA. Currently, his single, featuring Trey Songz, “Can’t Get Enough,” is dominating the radio.
