Since the release of 2010’s The DeAndre Way, Soulja Boy has been on the mixtape scene. His videos have been popular online, as has his name. Several artists have gone to the mixtape scene in order to build their buzz. At seemingly the peak of his career, Lil Wayne stopped releasing albums and recorded a series of mixtapes.

Throughout his career, Soulja Boy has been doubted. Following his initial popularity, many grew tired of his raps. Not known as a lyrical rapper, Soulja Boy turned heads with his performance on “Pronto,” off Snoop Dogg’s Malice n Wonderland. Soulja Boy told the critics he could be a lyrical rapper, but he does not want to be like Lupe Fiasco and go over their heads.

Following a short exchange with Lupe Fiasco, Soulja Boy hit the mixtape scene with a vengeance and his videos soon found themselves on the top hip hop websites. Now, Soulja Boy is returning with his next album. Set for release in 2012 is his next album, Promise. Soulja Boy says this new album shows his growth and maturity, both as a person and a lyricist.
