During an interview with Red Bull Music Academy, Mannie Fresh opened up on his journey to become the hip hop powerhouse he is today. Growing up, Mannie Fresh did not ask for toys and games on Christmas. Instead, he asked for instrumentals. This led the groundwork of Fresh’s huge impact on the hip hop game.

However, during his childhood, Mannie Fresh questioned his Christmas gifts. Fresh watched one friend receive a bike and another receive a video game system. Meanwhile, he would receive turntables for Christmas. Looking back, Mannie Fresh feels his father saw something special in him.

By the time he was twelve, Mannie Fresh took an interest in the instruments and the groundwork was laid. When he got older, Mannie Fresh became a producer and the labels he reached out to wanted him to make gangsta rap. Mannie Fresh, however, wanted to make bounce music. When he reached out to Cash Money Records, they allowed him the creative freedom, which led to the label growing from a local label and into an international powerhouse.
