During the late 1990s, many New York rappers moved down South to Miami. Diddy was among the first rappers to begin moving to and representing Miami. Fat Joe soon followed, and began working with artists in the area.
In the years since then, Cash Money Records has nearly re-located from New Orleans to Miami. DJ Khaled did this and helped redevelop the Miami hip hop scene. Rick Ross has become one of the biggest rappers through his work.
However, it was Luther Campbell, then known as Uncle Luke, who introduced the world to Miami rap. Time has passed since he was a dominant force in the game. Still, though, he remains very outspoken about the rap game.
Despite losing in his bid for Miami’s mayor, Luther Campbell still cares about his city. In an open letter, posted in the Miami New Times, Campbell said all these rappers should give back to the city. Campbell said all they do is soak up the sunshine, take over the nightclubs, and sleep with the women without investing money in the city. Uncle Luke wants this to change, he wants to see them do more for the city.
