Jay-Z and Kanye West performing at 2011 MTV Video Music Awards

Jay-Z and Kanye West are performing at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards

Currently on top of the hip hop world, The Throne (Jay-Z and Kanye West), will be performing at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The last time Jay-Z and Kanye West were active at the VMAs, they were the center of controversy. Jay-Z went off on Lil’ Mama for taking the stage during his “Empire State of Mind” performance.

However, the most-pivotal part of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards was when Kanye West confronted Taylor Swift. Kanye’s stunt came close to costing him his career. Because he snatched the microphone from the country singer as she was accepting her award, fans grew angry at him. The backlash took its toll on Kanye West, who remained out of the spotlight for over a year.

Late last year, Kanye West returned, confronting his VMA outburst, on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The album was reviewed by many as the best hip hop album of 2010. Only days after the release of his comeback album, it was revealed he and Jay-Z would release a collaborative album. The title of the album was revealed to be Watch the Throne. Despite being slated for an early 2011 release date, the album did not come until earlier this month.

Back on top of the game, MTV has reached out to Jay-Z and Kanye West to provide a performance at the 2011 edition of their awards’ ceremony. Other performers include Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé, along with many others.
