A hole was left in the New York hip hop scene following Jay-Z’s retirement, Murder Inc.’s downfall, and DMX’s retirement. While each of these artists have attempted comebacks, for the most part, New York hip hop remains in transition. Years ago, hip hop was born on the streets of New York City.
With the introduction of other rap scenes, it seems as if the current rappers from New York have forgotten they are the originators. There are some, too, who embrace everyone. Cory Gunz is the rare blend who embraces everyone and has the ability to establish himself as the next dominant rapper from New York City.
Signed to Young Money, the record label of Lil Wayne, Cory Gunz is also the son of legendary rapper, Peter Gunz. Recently, Cory Gunz was featured on Lil Wayne’s hit single, “6 Foot 7 Foot,” with his verse making the song his own. Despite being released in December, the song still receives heavy radio rotation. With this, the commercial hip hop fans have been introduced to Cory Gunz, even though he has been doing this for years.
Not only is Cory Gunz one of the hottest rappers in the game, he is also the star of his own reality show. The popular music network, MTV, gave Cory Gunz his own reality show. Nick Cannon, his manager, was the person who pushed this show the most. Cannon works for Viacom, MTV’s parent company, and he has his own production company. It was a no-brainer for Cannon to put his own artist on one of his television projects.
Cory Gunz has the advantage other New York legends never did, which will help him when he begins releasing his own albums. Also, he has advantages over other rising New York rappers. Over the past five years, any New York rapper to debut has been crowned as the future of the city. But, few of them possess the lyrical ability, popularity, reach, and swagger of Cory Gunz. Years from now, Cory Gunz will be viewed as a legend in the rap game.
