Many had never heard of E-40 until 2006, when he released two hits, “Tell Me When to Go” and “U and Dat.” In addition to his own hits, he also appeared on Lil Jon’s “Snap Ya Fingers,” but E-40 was an afterthought within a year.

For those who do not know, E-40 has been in the game for well over twenty years. One reason why he has not had much mainstream success is because he has never been signed to a major label. Instead, he records for independent labels.

While E-40 will never be as famous as many major label artists, he can always brag about staying true to himself. One reason why E-40 has avoided going major is because he likes to take his time. Major labels rush projects together looking for hits.

E-40 offered advice for new artists trying to get into the game. For those who want to remain in full control of their careers, E-40 said go independent. But, for those who want to have a quick ride on the top and lose their initial identity, E-40 advised them to look for a major. Overall, E-40 said new artists should actually fear major labels.
